Pick the Sport, Find the Action, Get in the Game!

BEACH VOLLEYBALL — October 24th just in time for Halloween, Manhattan Beach is hosting a ‘ghost-volleyball’ tourny. The quality of play is very impacted by the sheet hanging over the net, and costumes. Its a ton of fun to both play and watch. Details and sign-up info

ADVENTURE — “All are welcome,” according to HiketheGeek.com, “but it helps if you’re a godless sinner, too smart for your own good, and have a good sense of humor.” The site sets up group weekend hiking trips across the southland, and not just for the pale, lonely blogger living in the studio upstairs (cough, cough). More information can be found at www.hikethegeek.com.

SOCCER — With leagues playing every night of the week in beach locales from Manhattan Beach to Santa Monica, South Bay Sports has organized games for most levels of soccer. You can sign up with a full team or, if you’re friendless, by yourself as a free agent. And they won’t even tell you if you’re picked last. Check them out at www.southbaysports.com.

KICKBALL — Get over your recurring recess/wedgie nightmares by signing up for the World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA). The “Jewel City” league, not named for the Alaskan singer/”poet”/snaggletooth, is currently open for registrations; it plays on Wednesday nights at the Eagle Rock Community Center. Find out more and sign up at www.kickball.com.

GOLF — Now is the time of year to be taking advantage of twilight rates at LA public golf courses, because even a hack can play nine holes in four hours. If you can’t, stick to the Playstation. Course info and prices.

MORE GOLF — Malibu Country Club is an LA golf experience with a more relaxed attitude reflective of the Malibu scene. www.malibucountryclub.net

BASKETBALL — Join the action every day at the Spectrum Club in El Segundo.  The lunch time games are among the most competitive games in the city.  Bring your A game. www.spectrumclubs.com

DARTS — Fun facts about darts: The green circle surrounding the red center of a dartboard is sometimes called an “iris,” there is betting on professional darts through several online gaming entities, and some people even play it sober. The Pacific Darts Association tests the last theory, with leagues in British and Brit-friendly pubs across LA and Orange County. Check out the organization online, www.pacificdarts.com.

POKER — You will never play for the Yankees. You will never suit up for the Patriots. But you could compete against the world’s best in poker with a little (lot of) luck. One way to try is at Hollywood Park Casino, where HPC and AM 570 team up on the last Sunday of every month for a low buy-in ($25 plus $10 in fees) tournament with the top two finishers earning a chance to play in the final table … at the Palms in Las Vegas. For more info

CYCLING —If you spent $25 for your bicycle on Craig’s List and use it exclusively to get from Point A to Point B, skip this paragraph. If the Tour de France is more your speed, SoCalCycling.com has the low-down on rides of like-minded enthusiasts throughout the southland. Check out the “Rides” page for information on weekly packs of cyclists taking over roadways and – hopefully – dodging angry SUVs.
