USC recovering from a tough beat down matches up against a red hot UCLA team on Saturday— The first football meeting between these two was played September 28, 1929 and the rivalry continues today. Over the years both schools have engaged in some serious pranking but the 1960s are considered by many to the be apex.
"USC hijacked the delivery truck of the UCLA school newspaper and changed in with their own imitations on more than one occasion. The Big “C” was a great symbol among students at UCLA, Unfortunately it also was often the target of practical pranks by USCers. Students from USC once painted the “Big C” red and gold. USCers would also sabotage the card stunts at UCLA football games so that they cards would read “USC”.
UCLA also played their own set of pranks on USC. Up until the late 1960s, a organization called “The Kelps” were responsible for many of the pranks that were performed on USC. Some pranks included- but not limited to- dumping 500 pounds of manure on Tommy Trojan and changing the newspaper articles to insult USC. In 1966, they captured USC students, shaved their eyebrows, painted their faces blue, shaved their heads and then tied them to a flagpole for a pep rally.
In 1966, the rivalry became intense. The Pac-8 decided to send USC to the Rose Bowl instead of UCLA (which had won more games during the season). Students marched onto Wilshire and onto the 405. They delayed traffic for three hours! According to a source in the Morgan Center, the students did not stop protesting until the UCLA football players spoke to them and persuaded them to come back to campus."
